Finding a place that welcomes toddlers, teenagers, AND terriers can be a challenge. Luckily, Magaliesburg is built for the outdoors.
We know that “pet-friendly” sometimes means “tie your dog to a pole in the parking lot.” Not here. We believe family adventures should include the whole family.
Here are our top 5 picks for a weekend that keeps everyone’s tails wagging.
1. MelonRouge Eatery (The Garden)
Naturally, we have to start at home. We designed our estate to be a sanctuary for everyone. Our Eatery garden is massive, shaded by ancient Oaks, and completely fenced from the main road.
- For Kids: Plenty of grass to run on and explore.
- For Dogs: We are strictly pet-friendly. Leashed dogs are welcome at your table, and we usually have a water bowl ready.
- For Parents: Coffee. Strong, hot coffee and a slice of our famous cake while you watch the chaos from a safe distance.
2. Mountain Sanctuary Park
If your family is active, this is the hiking spot. Unlike many reserves that ban dogs, Mountain Sanctuary Park allows them (by prior arrangement and permit).
The trails range from “easy stroll” to “leg burner,” winding through spectacular rock formations. The best part? The crystal clear mountain pools. After a hot hike, cooling off in a natural rock pool is a core childhood memory waiting to happen.
- Tip: It gets busy on weekends, so book your day permit in advance.
3. Van Gaalen Cheese Farm
A working farm where you can see how cheese is made? Yes please. Van Gaalen Kaasmakerij is a staple of the Magaliesburg community.
- For the Family: They offer guided tours of the cheese factory (fascinating for curious kids) and sell picnic hampers that you can enjoy on the banks of the Skeerpoort River.
- For the Active: They have an extensive network of mountain bike and hiking trails that are widely considered some of the best in Gauteng.
4. Sable Ranch Hiking
Just a bit further out, Sable Ranch offers a fantastic hiking experience that is safe and well-maintained. They have specific trails that are manageable for younger children (around 5km) while still offering incredible views of the flora and fauna.
It’s a great spot to spot game like wildebeest and impala on foot—a mini safari that keeps the little ones engaged.
5. Dinner at Black Horse Brewery
After a long day of hiking and exploring, you need a solid meal. Just down the road from us is the magnificent Black Horse Brewery.
Set on a lush green estate with tall trees and roaming horses, it is picture-perfect. Their artisanal craft beers and gin on tap are a treat for the adults, while the wood-fired pizzas are a guaranteed hit with the kids.
- Vibe Check: It’s relaxed, spacious, and the sunset views over the valley are unbeatable.

Why not make a day of it? Start with a morning hike at Sable Ranch, grab a cheese platter at Van Gaalen, and end with a late lunch or coffee at MelonRouge.
