Magaliesburg is more than just a dot on the map west of Johannesburg; it is a sanctuary. For decades, city slickers have been escaping to our valley to breathe deeper, walk slower, and eat better.
But with so many hidden gems scattered along the R563 and R24, planning the perfect day trip can be overwhelming. Do you hike? Do you shop? Do you just eat cheese until you pass out?
As locals who have lived and breathed this air for over 15 years, we have curated the ultimate day trip itinerary. Whether you are a history buff, a foodie, or an adventurer, this guide will help you squeeze the very best out of the Cradle of Humankind.
06:00 — Up and Away with Bill Harrop
Trust us, it is worth the early wake-up call. There is no better way to appreciate the sheer scale of the Magaliesberg Mountains—some of the oldest visible mountains on Earth—than from the silence of a hot air balloon basket.
We highly recommend Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris. Operating for over 40 years, they are the pioneers of ballooning in South Africa. Their clubhouse is just a short scenic drive away in Skeerpoort. Drifting over the game reserves as the sun hits the cliffs is a spiritual experience you won’t forget.
- Pro Tip: Dress in layers. It’s freezing before launch but warms up quickly once the sun clears the ridges.
09:30 — Coffee & The Hunt
By the time you land, your adrenaline will be fading and the caffeine craving will be kicking in. Drive straight to MelonRouge (T2 Bekker Schools Road).
We open our doors early. Grab a strong cappuccino and a slice of our homemade cake at The Eatery before the crowds arrive.
Once you are caffeinated, it’s time to hunt. Magaliesburg is the unofficial vintage capital of Gauteng, and our estate is home to BlueCheese Antiques.
- What to look for: We specialize in “kitchenalia”—think vintage enamel flour bins, copper jelly moulds, and 1950s Pyrex.
- For the collectors: Ask to see our selection of Victorian silverware.
“We don’t sell things; we sell stories. Every chipped cup and faded map on our shelves lived a life before it got here.”
12:00 — History Deep Dive
You are in the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It would be a crime to leave without paying your respects to our ancestors.
Just a 15-minute drive from MelonRouge lies Maropeng. The architecture alone is worth the visit—the visitor center is designed to look like an ancient burial mound rising from the earth. Inside, the interactive exhibits trace the journey of our species from the very beginning.
- Don’t miss: The underground boat ride. It’s cheesy, fun, and surprisingly educational.
13:30 — The Lazy Lunch
By now, you’ve flown, shopped, and time-traveled. You are hungry. Head back towards the heart of Magaliesburg for a proper country lunch.
At MelonRouge, we believe in “slow food.” Our country dining is legendary for a reason—think roast meats, crispy potatoes, pumpkin fritters, and malva pudding, just like Ouma used to make.
If it’s a weekday, grab a table in the Garden. Under the shade of our giant Oak trees, you can order our famous Chicken Pie or a Boere Beefy Cheesy Lasagne. It’s hearty, unpretentious comfort food that tastes like home.
- Note: We are strictly pet-friendly, so feel free to bring your dogs along for lunch.
15:30 — Analog Soul & Art
Before you head back to the city, take a slow walk through the rest of the estate.
- AvoRecords: Even if you don’t own a record player, stepping into our vinyl shop is a vibe. Flipping through crates of Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis, and obscure South African pressings is a tactile joy that Spotify just can’t replicate.
- Artichoke Gallery: Wander through our eclectic art space. We champion local artists who capture the spirit of the Magaliesberg. From sculptures in the garden to oil paintings on the walls, it’s a feast for the eyes.
17:30 — Sundowners at Black Horse
You don’t have to rush home just yet. To cap off the perfect day, drive down the road to Black Horse Brewery.
It is one of the most picturesque spots in the valley, with lush green paddocks and roaming black Friesian horses. Grab a table on their terrace, order a tasting tray of their artisanal craft beers (or a G&T on tap), and watch the sun dip behind the mountains. It is the quintessential Magaliesburg sunset experience.
19:00 — The Drive Home
As you drive back towards Johannesburg with a boot full of antiques and a belly full of pie, take the scenic route past the Sterkfontein Caves. The late afternoon light hitting the grasslands is spectacular.
